Soil & Water Conservation District - Education

Holmes SWCD has a wealth of resources for teachers and students. We provide in-classroom and camp programs about soil, water, and other related subjects.

The Enviroscape watershed model is an excellent visual for nonpoint source pollution. It can be demonstrated by SWCD personnel in your classroom or you may borrow it and demonstrate it yourself.

In addition, we have the equipment needed for water quality monitoring, using the kick seine method to search for macroinvertebrates. This is a great hands-on way to get students to understand the importance of clean water. The macroinvertebrates are ugly enough to keep students' attention and make learning fun!

Student Opportunities

The Holmes SWCD board sponsors scholarships for OFA Forestry Camp every year. Students must have completed the eighth grade to be eligible, and camp is the second week in June at Camp Muskingum. SWCDs sponsor the Ohio Envirothon, which is a great opportunity for high school students to work as a team and learn more about natural resources.
