Walnut Creek Covered Bridge

Background
In October, of 2007 Holmes County received funding by Federal and State Grants to cover 100% of the project. On October 14, 2008 the project was bid and awarded to VO Menuez and Sons.  It will span 55’ center to center across the Walnut Creek stream.  The inside opening will be 24’ x 14’ 11” and will have a 5’ walkway.  Oak timbers will support the structure, with siding and railing being a combination of Cedar and Douglas fir.

You may ask “Why is a bridge covered?”  It is quite simple, for protection from the elements and longer lifespan.   An enclosure provides protection for the working part of the structural members and roadbed.  Wooden bridges tended to deteriorate rapidly from exposure to the elements, having a useful lifespan that may only last for 10 to 15 years. Covering them protects their structural members, thus extending their life to 80 years or more.We look forward to the completion of the covered bridge and hope you will take the time come and visit this valuable asset to Holmes County.
